The Area Community Health Emissaries’ (ACHE) Dental Clinic is once again open for business.

The clinic finished its move to a new office, located at 516 W. McCord, on Tuesday and reopened at 8 a.m. this morning.

Sally Franklin, patient care coordinating supervisor, said the new building offers more than twice the space of the previous 500-square-foot facility, located at 916 W. South.

“Last year, our clinic provided 3,259 clinic services and services to schoolchildren,” Franklin said.

ACHE serves low-income children ages 2-21 and disabled adults who receive Medicaid.

“We serve all races, genders and ethnicities,” Franklin said. “The majority of our patients are low income, and approximately 15 percent are pregnant and on Medicaid. If a client doesn’t qualify for Medicaid, then payment is on a sliding scale based on income. We can do everything here from pulling a baby tooth to doing a root canal.”

The clinic, which also has a facility in Anderson, serves people in Newton, McDonald, Lawrence, Jasper, Barton and Barry counties. Burks said ACHE is also establishing a clinic in Nevada, Mo.
The clinic provides dental screenings, fluoride varnishes and sealants to children’s teeth in addition to dental care such as filling cavities. The clinic also conducts dental classes in area schools, including Neosho, East Newton, Westview, Carthage, McDonald County and Avilla, teaching kids how to properly care for their teeth and passing out toothbrushes, toothpaste and other healthy smile supplies.

The new location has four operating rooms, four dentists, a large waiting room and office space. The previous clinic had two operating rooms, meaning only one dentist at a time could work in the space.

The clinic originally hoped to move in January, Nancy Burks, director, said in a previous interview with the Daily News. However, bad weather hampered renovations on the new location.
Workers and volunteers began moving the clinic last week, with the finishing touches and cleanup taking place Tuesday afternoon.

ACHE began in 2003, with the first clinic located in Pineville, which later was moved to Anderson. Since that time, satellite offices have opened in Neosho and Carthage and the clinic is establishing a facility in Nevada, Mo.

ACHE is funded through a mixture of public funds, such as grants, and private donations. For more information on how to contribute, contact Burks or Franklin at 845-2243.
