An Arkansas man is accused of second-degree murder, first-degree assault resulting in serious physical injury, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with a shooting incident Friday night in Washburn.
Brian Clapper, 31, of Bentonville pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday morning. Clapper, who is being held in the McDonald County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond, is expected to be back in court on Oct. 31 for a pre-trial conference.
McDonald County Sheriff Robert Evenson said deputies responded to a report of a shooting at 445 Cecil Epling Way in Washburn. Upon arrival, deputies found John Bevill, 34, of that address dead of an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. A second man, Kendrick Long, 22, of Rogers, was found at a nearby residence with a gunshot wound to the arm. Long was airlifted to a Joplin hospital.
After an initial investigation, deputies and troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol went to a location on Missouri Highway 90 in McDonald County near the intersection of Route E and took Clapper into custody without incident.
If convicted, Clapper could face up to 30 years or life in prison on the murder and assault charges, while a judge or jury would determine the penalty for the armed criminal action counts.
