It is probably the quietest place in the South Elementary School, the school’s library that is.

For the past 31 years, Shelia Freund has worked as a library assistant.

“I started at Goodman for a couple of months, and then I got transferred up here,” said Freund. “We check books in and out for the students, I shelve the books on the shelf, we process books when we get new books in, get them catalogued and put on the shelves. We assist the teachers when they want a group of books or when they want anything, like if they are doing a unit on a certain animal, then we pull the books on them.”

Freund was asked a series of questions about her job.

Q. Why do you enjoy being a library assistant so much?

A. Well, I love books and I love the children. I love to see them read. And they enjoy reading.

Q. You have classes that come in, explain how that works?

A. I have classes, K-4, once a week, we have check in and check out and then we have an activity or read to them. We teach them different things about the library.

Q. Technology has changed over the years in the library such as a card catalog to computers, you want to talk about that?

A. It was a good thing when we had the card catalog, because you could always go back through the cards and find books. Now, it is all computerized.

Q. Do you miss how it use to be?

A. In a way, I do. On the days when our computer system is down, you really can’t do anything, you can’t check in or check out, you have to write everything down.

Q. Where would you like to see the library in the next few years?

A. I would love to see the library expand and be bigger, because our classes are getting bigger, and it would be nice to have a bigger library with more books for them to check out.

Q. Who is your favorite author?

A. I like Bill Wallace, he is really a good author and he is from Oklahoma. I enjoy reading his books.

Q. What type of books does he write?

A. He writes fiction books and mysteries.

Q. What type of books do the kids read?

A. It seems like they like non-fiction, (like animal books).
