The Freeman Family Southwest YMCA is adding art programming to their schedule this month.

“We’re trying to branch out and broaden our horizons as well as different art classes, art offerings,” said Justin Stewart, member services director.

Mondays will be family arts and crafts night as parents and their pre-school and older children join in the activity. The September theme is mosaics and participants will be working with tiles and foam squares during the one-hour evening sessions.

The classes start Sept. 13 and will run from 6 to 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per month-long session.

“It covers everyone in the family,” Stewart said.

So far, the Y has scheduled three sessions for September, October and November. The September classes start the second Monday of the month. The Y will be closed Labor Day.

ADULT ARTS

The Active Older Adults group will have an art class on Tuesdays starting in September.

Drawing classes start Sept. 7. The class will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pencils and sketch pads will be provided. The class costs $20 for members and $40 for community members. The class will start with scenery sketches and progress from there. A retired schoolteacher will teach the class designed for seniors.

“We’re kind of targeting that more toward the Active Older Adults, but anyone is welcome to show up,” Stewart said.

The Y asks that interested members sign up so they can order materials for the classes.
