The University of Missouri Extension Service, Elk River Watershed Improvement Association (ERWIA), Missouri Conservation Department, and the McDonald County Soil and Water Conservation District would like to announce the fourth annual Water Awareness Festival for all fifth graders in the McDonald County school system.
The festival is co-sponsored by University of Missouri Extension Service, ERWIA, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Stream Team, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the McDonald County FFA Chapter.
The two-day event to familiarize 300-plus fifth grade McDonald County students with various components of a watershed and how they all function effectively together. Emphasis is placed on the local Elk River Watershed.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15-16 at the McDonald County Fairgrounds’ indoor exhibit building, located near McDonald County High School.
The event will teach and inspire watershed stewardship to fifth grade students through interactive environmental demonstrations and activities focused on environmental awareness and how water quality and quantity affect people locally and nationally. Students and their teachers will be bused to the festival where there will be two sets of seven stations for 20 minutes per station. Activities and demonstrations include ground water flow model, environmental landscapes, building your own watershed, stream table, macro invertebrates display, brain gauge, riparian corridor activity and a fun and educational presentation from the “Fishin Magicians.”
