Rec Plex seeks instructors

Anyone out there teach kickboxing? How about yoga? Tai chi?

That’s what the Neosho Parks and Recreation Department would like to know as plans are being made to expand offerings at the city’s Rec Plex (formally called the Rec Center).

Recreation buildings manager Amy Moritz said she’s looking for certified trainers to give group sessions at the Rec Plex in all of the activities mentioned above. She’s also hoping to offer cooking lessons in the building’s full kitchen if someone can be found to give them. All instructors would be under paid contract.

If Moritz and other staff within the department have their way, the new community courses would be available before the end of this year.

“I’d like to start as soon as possible,” Moritz said. “Just as soon as we have instructors.”

But, she added, it might be just as well if the new classes didn’t kick off until the beginning of next year and ride the expected wave of New Year’s resolutions so as to get more sign-ups.

Whenever they may begin, however, Neosho Parks and Rec Director Todd Banes said he’s hoping for both morning and evening classes.

“We’d like to use the facility as much as we can and mornings are a downtime for us,” Banes said. “So if we can find both students and teachers for mornings in some of the things we’re wanting to offer, that would be ideal for us.”

Meanwhile, city sports coordinator Tee Potter said she’s wanting to get people signed up for skateboard lessons — another future offering at the Rec Plex.

Potter said she already has an instructor and now just needs some students — which will probably be kids, but who knows?

According to Banes, it’s adults that they’re trying to get more involved.

“We want to reach every segment of the population of Neosho,” he said. “I think the feeling is the Rec Plex is for kids only and we would like to see that changed.”
