The Crowder College Board of Trustees approved the hire of new vice president of academic affairs Dr. Glenn Coltharp Thursday morning at their monthly board meeting.

He is taking over for current vice president of academic affairs Dr. Herb Schade, who plans to retire at the end of June.

Coltharp is no stranger to an academic setting, as his background includes serving as the assistant superintendent for the Joplin School District and the Carthage R-9 School District, as superintendent of schools at the Carl Junction R-1 School  District, and most recently at Missouri Southern State University, where he served as dean of the school of education.

He will begin his duties at Crowder College Feb. 1.

“It’s exciting to be part of the Crowder family,” Coltharp said. “I have 30 years of educational experience, most of that was in the K-12 world. I’m looking forward to being here and building on those bridges between the K-12 and the four-year with Missouri State, Pitt State and with Missouri Southern. A lot of exciting things in the future and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Board members also approved a bid for construction manager at the future McDonald County. The board accepted a bid of $288,750 from Nabholz Construction Services, significantly lower than those of competing bidders.

Dr. Jim Cummins, vice president of finance, said normally when a bid comes in so much lower than its competitors it can be a cause for alarm, however, after thoroughly questioning Nabholz representatives and checking the company’s references, he is confident in the recommendation.

The second lowest bidder was JE Dunn, with a bid of $474,672.

“Any time there’s that big of a disparity some questions need to be asked,” Cummins said. “They answered them all appropriately in our opinion. To be real honest, they want their foot in the door, so they were real aggressive in their bidding.”

Cummins said the construction team has already begun on plans for the campus, and currently the only hold up is the pending construction of a road near the future campus.

He said Crowder officials plan to sit down with the design team Jan. 31 to go over prints for the new site.

Dr. Alan Marble, Crowder College President, suggested that the board hold a groundbreaking ceremony sometime in March, though the final date is still to be determined.

“We’re going to move some dirt there pretty quick,” Marble said, adding that fundraising for the new site is currently at $860,000.

The McDonald County campus will be located just north of Jane.

Following the regular meeting, board members went into closed session under RSMo 610.021 to discuss the hiring of personnel and the purchasing, selling or leasing of real estate.
