A Neosho man has pleaded guilty to slashing his wife’s throat in early January and has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Marvin R. Morgan, 57, entered the guilty plea Friday before Newton County Division III Associate Circuit Court Judge Kevin Lee Selby. Morgan was sentenced to 15 years in prison on a Class A felony count of first-degree domestic assault resulting in serious physical injury, which carried a punishment range of 10 to 30 years.
Morgan also pleaded guilty to an unclassified felony count of armed criminal action, and received a three-year prison term for that felony. The term will be served consecutively, or after, the 15-year term.
The charges stemmed from a Jan. 4 incident that took place at Morgan’s home. At about 11:17 p.m. that day, Morgan called police to his home at 906 N. Lincoln, telling authorities his wife had been cut with a knife and was coughing up blood.
Upon arrival, officers found Morgan’s wife lying on the kitchen floor with a six-inch slash in the right side of her neck. An officer at the scene wrote in a probable cause affidavit that the slash was deep enough he could see the muscles moving inside her neck as she turned her head. The officer said he and other officers saw large pools of blood on and near a living room sofa.
Ms. Morgan survived the attack.
