The Newton County Fair opens Wednesday night at the Roy Jean Carter Memorial Fairgrounds, off Lyon Drive in Neosho. A full schedule of events can be found in today’s insert and in the Daily News, but here’s some highlights you won’t want to miss.
Evening entertainment
From homegrown country to a Joplin musical group that survived the May 22 storm there is music for everyone at the Newton County Fair. Entertainment was moved last year to the south end of the fairgrounds across from the youth building. There will be a Karaoke contest Thursday night and cloggers will perform at 7 p.m Thursday and Saturday.
Tent space
Don’t be looking for air conditioning at this year’s fair, find a fan instead.
The tents will be set up on the old slab where the commercial building was, but just getting repairs done on time on the damaged buildings was a challenge.
“This year we’re going to be under the big top,” said Newton County A & M Society President Estella Osborn.
Damage to petting zoo, dairy barn, beef barn and show arena was repaired before the fair.
Critters
This marks the second year for the Best of Show award, giving to the top breeding animal of its species. Organizers said instituting the award has brought more breeding stock to the fair. Awards are at 6 p.m. Friday.
“We’re seeing more breeding animals coming back this year,” Osborn said.
Saturday at 7 p.m. the market sale brings the fair to a close. Support 4H and FFA members by bidding at the market sale inside the show arena. Buyers and supporters are recognized annually.
Eats
More than 10 food vendors will provide all the county fair standards: funnel cakes and cotton candy, hamburgers and hotdogs and barbecue. There will also be root beer and loaded nachos and, from the Newton County Cattlemen’s association, roasted corn on the cob.
Carnival and tractors
Get your rides early! Bluff City Amusements will provide this year’ carnival. Wristbands are available for $15, but on Wednesday night any ride will be $1. Spring River Pulling Association will hold a tractor pull at the nearby Ozark Saddle Club Arena on Friday and Saturday night – just follow the sound of the engines.
