Donald Rance Weems, 75, Mokane, Mo., died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, while visiting family in Denver, Colo.

He was born May 14, 1934, in Neosho. He spent his earliest years in and around the community of Wanda, in Newton County and late elementary school in Neosho. His family moved to Farmington, N.M. in 1948, where he attended high school.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force shortly after graduation and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Uzzell, after completing boot camp in California in 1952.

Of that union were born seven children, Rosalind Kay Masek, Arvada, Colo., Stephen Don Weems, Nashville, Tenn., Chris Michael Weems, Logan, Utah, Kenneth Mel Weems, Hutchinson, Kan., Roger Lane Weems, Springfield, Mo., James Scott Weems, Meridian, Idaho, and Sharon Elizabeth Shorthose, Jefferson City, Mo.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the armed forces, he attended and graduated from the University of Illinois. Upon graduation, he worked for a large farm service organization in Illinois – FS Services, Inc., and later moved to Missouri to manage the propane operations of MFA Oil Company. In 1964, he accepted the position of executive secretary of the Missouri LP-Gas Association in Jefferson City, where he served to retirement in 1989. He became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in January 1971, and soon after served faithfully as a bishop, counselor in the Stake Presidency, and held various leadership positions through out the years of his life. He felt a duty and personal responsibility to serve the Lord wherever he was needed.

After his wife of 35 years passed away in 1987, he married Dora Saling of Mokane. She added seven step-children with his seven children. Together, they have enjoyed their 14 children, 47 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

To honor his wishes, a private burial ceremony was held on Friday, June 26, at Riverview Cemetery, Jefferson City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1603 Kingswood Drive, Fulton, Mo. Friends will be received at noon at the church before the service.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Perpetual Education Fund.
