Sybil Shiply (Jobe) Perrin died May 7, 2008, at the age of 83.
Sybil was born June 11, 1924, to Dave and Orpha Shipley in a log cabin in Douglas County, Mo. She moved to Jolly Mill in Newton County at an early age and then to Pierce City. She graduated from Pierce City High School and then went to Drury College.
She met and married Herman Jobe on July 20, 1942. Together they had three boys: retired Col. Jerry and wife, Mary Anne, Alexandria, Va., Dr. David and wife, Pearl, Salem, Ore., and Dale and wife, Mary Ann, Neosho. They also have seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Herman preceded her in 2002.
In 2004 she married Joseph (Pat) Perrin and moved to Reno, Nev. Sybil attended Joplin Junior College and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Pittsburg State Teachers College. She started teaching school at Westview, then at Irving School in Joplin, retiring in 1984.
Sybil loved teaching, but her passion in life was music. During her high school years, she received many awards. During the 1950s, she performed often on local television and had her own weekly radio program. Until the mid 1990s, she was involved in many musical programs throughout the Ozarks.
After retirement, Sybil was involved in genealogy and local history. She wrote many books on family history. She was also co-author and author of many local history books for the Historical Society including City of Springs volumes I and II and Rural Schools of Newton County. Her last book was A History of Newton County Missouri As Portrayed in the Courthouse Mural.
Sybil was instrumental in the creation and development of Newton County Historical Park, especially the moving and the restoration of the One Room School House. She was a lifetime member of Newton County Historical Society, Newton County Retired Teachers, Newton County Mental Health Board, Library Board and many other local organizations.
Sybil will be missed.
