Arlen D. Ross, Neosho, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at St. John’s Medical Center in Joplin, following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Solano, N.M., and married Gloria Gay Saunders on Dec. 20, 1950, in Raton, N.M.  Blessed with more than 50 years of marriage, Gay preceded him in death on June 14, 2002.

He was employed for 34 years by Wheatland Electric Cooperative in Garden City, Kan., and retired in 1989. He then purchased a dairy, and moved to the Neosho area in 1992.

Arlen was a true cowboy and epitomized the values and traditions of the American west. He raised beef cows and ran pasture cattle in southwest Kansas and was a member of the Polled Hereford Assoc. A lifetime member of the NRA, he was involved in rodeo, a saddle club, and served as leader for a girls equestrian drill team.

He was a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church, and was well known in both Jasper and Newton counties for bringing his group of family members to sing and entertain in area nursing homes.

Survivors include four daughters: Gwen Hibler and husband, Rick, Montezuma, Kan., Pam Shirar and husband, Jerry, Hanover Park, Ill., Patti Welch and husband, Wade, Neosho, and Jean Wortman and husband, Jay, also of Neosho.
Another daughter, Jerri Dee, preceded him in death.

Arlen also left behind 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Northside Baptist Church in Neosho with Pastor Terry Swagerty officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodward Mortuary and Crematory of Joplin. The family asks that memorial contributions are made to Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 3990 Joplin, Mo. 64803.

The family would like to encourage everyone to join them to share their happy memories of Arlen immediately following the service.
