I was trying to think of a way to try to keep the pests out of my garden as I walked along Wildcat Boulevard the other morning. The squirrels started eating green tomatoes and the woodchuck is chucking up lettuce. This year I planted 16 tomato plants in hopes the squirrels would leave a few for Kay and me. I had six plants last year and that was not enough. The squirrels did not share.

I have live trapped many creatures over the years to try to save the garden. I always have the fear of getting a skunk. Getting skunks out of live traps is difficult.
Recently I talked with a lady who has deer pests. They like her flowers as much or more than she does. She said they have some success with slivers of Irish Spring soap in the flowers. The problem is that rain melts the soap.
She also has tried a perfume that she does not like very well. She hopes the deer dislike it as much as she does.
Some people say that tufts of human hair keep pests away. Maybe I need to talk to my barber.
I had a bit of a rash on my hand the other day. I don’t know what caused it. I began remembering that my mother and I both had what she called “spring rash” each year. It was prevalent on the hands and between the fingers. I knew it would only last a few days and so I went on with life. Today, I wonder what we had and why we had it each spring.
Have you noticed that one of the dog food commercials claims that their dog food contains  duck, quail, and venison? Sounds like good food for a hunting dog.
I also read that a dog’s life should not be figured in years, but by the number of times the dog wags its tail. Would a dog with a docked tail have a short life?
We have had our house air conditioner on a few time on hot days. We don’t like the house all closed up as it needs to be with an air conditioner running, but keeping cool is nice, too.
Years ago, we had 2/40 air conditioners in our cars. To make it work you had to roll down two windows and go at least 40 miles per hour.
We still measure land by acres. The original acre was the amount of land that a man and team of oxen could plow in a day. John Deere revolutionized plowing with a used steel saw blade which was a “self-polisher.” Self polishing plows turned over the soil better (scoured) in the rich prairie soils.
John Deere is one of the few farm equipment companies that has not been bought out or gone out of business since I was a kid. The John Deere Corporation was not afraid to diversify and especially made products that can be used in urban settings.
At one time, International Harvester made all kinds of things besides farm equipment such as milking machines, refrigerators, and deep freezes. When they quit diversifying, they were absorbed by another company. Does diversity equal success?
Take a walk, try various things to keep pests out of the flower beds and gardens, use those signal lights, watch for pedestrians, and see what you notice while passing along Wildcat Boulevard.
