As I was driving to work the other day, I noticed that a lot of Neosho residents were gearing up for the annual garage sale – which will be held two days today and Saturday.
This year marks the 30th year for the annual bargain hunters to come into our city, shopping the countless sales and taking home items the purchased. The sales will be held rain or shine, but I am hoping for a lot of sun.
I have worked and held garage sales in the past, and I enjoy doing both this year. As far as the coverage aspect, it gets me out into the public, talking to not only the residents, but also the bargain hunters. In years past, I would park my car usually at the Neosho High School parking lot, walk up Senior Hill and travel down Oak Ridge Drive, High Street, South Street and make my way back to the car. Overall, it is a great way to get some exercise.
There have been times when I covered the event, that I have seen people with grocery carts to golf carts to baby carriages (and yes, no baby inside) to carry their items and even people with walkie-talkies to keep in touch with each other, as they families and friends split up searching for the bargains.
I remember one particular year I was covering the event and I stumbled upon a table full of Star Wars toys. Now being a collector of my favorite movie, I found two items that I just had to have. The first being a Han Solo Blaster and the other one was a Star Wars book that I had years and years ago. I think that I paid a total of $5 for both of them.
While walking around another year, I talked with a gentleman who was trying to find household items for his daughter’s upcoming marriage. He was looking for things to stock the couple’s house like end tables, a kitchen table, chairs and even dishes. Let me tell you, there are a lot of bargains out here during this event.
So I implore each of us to take time and visit some of the garage sales in the area.
Remember, the garage sales begin at 7 a.m., be careful and watch for pedestrians as they walk during the garage sales.

On Tuesday, April 3, the Neosho Daily News hosted its first Coffee with the Editor at Denny's in Neosho. We provided the coffee, and had around 10 people show up to talk about the paper, what they would like to see more or less in the paper. I want to thank all of those who attended.
We will be doing this on a monthly basis - on the first Tuesday of the month and we will let you know about a week in advance where it will be located at. As noted, we will provide the coffee, bring some of our current paper with us and overall, we want to hear your opinions and suggestions. During the event, we encouraged everyone to next time bring a friend or coworker or family member to the next event. I have already heard of a couple who will attend the May Coffee with the Editor.
