Neosho, Mo. -

With gas prices going up and up, I think it is time to purchase a bicycle and start riding to work (on selected days of course).

By using the bike, it has some good issues. First of all, by riding with a friend, you can talk about good times. When I was growing up and the weather was in the 80s or even higher, my best friend, Steve Haas, and I would take the bikes out and ride all through Newtonia and even out in the country. It gave us a time to talk about teenage stuff from dating to homework to even listening to the St. Louis Cardinals on the radio. Fun times.
Just after we graduated from East Newton High School in 1989, one time, we even biked more than 10 miles. We were sore.

Second, it is good exercise. Newtonia and the outlining areas had all sorts of terrain.
Some roads were straight, others had massive hills and then even some curves to throw in. I would always carry a water jug to quench my thirst. As long as you go at a steady pace, you won’t get worn out. With the exercise part, remember to wear comfortable shoes, clothes and always wear a baseball hat (to keep out the sun from in your eyes and a good way to keep the sun off of your head).

Of course prior to riding your bike, make sure that you have air in your tires, the seat is properly stationed and reflectors are in place.

The third advantage is saves GAS. Bikes don’t require one to fill up at the local gas station. That means you will have more money to spend on bills, watching a movie, spending time at home, eating at a restaurant or other things.

Now on the other side of the coin.

There are some disadvantages of riding a bike 24/7. The first being, if you are going out on the town with company, where do they sit? The second thing is, if it rains, how do you keep dry?

So as the weather is starting to look nicer and nicer each day, chances are that you will see me on a bike (when I purchase one that is).
