While scanning my e-mail Tuesday night, I came across a press release from Freeman Health System’s marketing department that caught my eye.

Knitters will gather to make comfort shawls in recognition of those who have saved a life through organ donations today and then again on March 30 at the Freeman Hospital West conference room 2W in Joplin.

The event for today started at noon and will conclude at 3 p.m.

I spoke with Regina Thomas, disaster recovery coordinator for Freeman Health System, about this unique event.

“We were hoping to give families of donors or potential donors a shawl while they are here, that they can take home with them, use at the hospital, and have as a reminder of the gift that they have given or they tried to give,” Thomas said. “It is something that our volunteers here at the hospital decided to do. However, anyone from outside is welcome to join if they are interested.”

The shawls provide a soft, tangible remembrance of loved ones. They  serve as a comforting reminder of those who have been blessed with the  gift of life because of the generosity of donors and their families.
Comfort shawls are a recent addition to Freeman Donor Council efforts  to honor this selfless act. For decades, Freeman Donor Council has served to educate and encourage organ donation.

Even though this is the first time the volunteers have done this at the hospital, Thomas said there has been others who have donated shawls  to the hospital. One such group is a knitting club from Webb City.

Thomas also noted the shawls are for both women and men, stating that  they can be used as a throw or a little blanket.

So, if you have some time and enjoy knitting, take part in this worthwhile event.
