Christmas is traditionally a time of giving.
While tough economic times has left everyone strapped this holiday season, we still need to consider the less fortunate among us and give, give, give!
There are a number of projects in the Neosho area asking for our help this year.
First, volunteers will be going door-to-door tomorrow asking for donations of non-perishable food items for the Newton County Food Basket Brigade. The brigade hopes to provide a Christmas dinner for about 1,200 needy families, as well as two weeks worth of staples.
Don’t forget the annual Shopping with Heroes program, formerly known as “Shop with a Cop.” While the name may have changed, the mission is still the same: to provide a Christmas shopping experience for needy kids. Earlier this week, the program was $6,400 short of its goal. Donations may be made by contacting Sgt. Dan Cook with the Neosho Police Department, 451-8012.
Even we at the Daily are asking for your help this year through the annual Share Your Christmas program, which began in 1970. Three families, each hardworking and each facing medical bills and other economic challenges, need your help. A complete listing of each family’s needs is in Thursday’s newspaper, and is available online at www.neoshodailynews.com.
Also, the Salvation Army is again stationing kettles at Wal-Mart. Not only does your donation help the less fortunate at Christmas, but throughout the year.
Another agency that needs helps residents in Newton and McDonald counties and needs our assistance is the Neosho Area United Community Fund. Donations may be made by calling Kathi Stephens, executive director, at 451-2125.
Yes, we may get caught up in the tinsel and lights, the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season. But it’s imperative we remember the less fortunate among us, and share of whatever bounty we have with others.
The feeling you get will likely be remembered long after the tree goes to the curb or back into storage, the batteries in the kids’ Christmas presents go flat, and this year’s toys, gadgets and trinkets are delegated to the closet, under the bed or in the basement or attic. It will last a lifetime.
