Neosho, Mo. -

We applaud ongoing efforts by the Neosho public works department to replace worn or damaged signs around town.

The city has been systematically divided into four quadrants for the budgeted program.
That said, however, there is one particular sign that needs closer observation when the time comes.

At the west end of Walnut Street, where it meets Neosho Boulevard, there is a rather small white sign — on a leaning post — warning drivers not to make a left turn onto the Boulevard during school hours, which are posted.

The sign is too small.

At this point, let it be stated that no one associated with this newspaper has received a traffic ticket for making an illegal left turn at that location.

But other drivers have.

Some of those we’ve spoken with said they had no idea you couldn’t make a left turn there. One person said they were usually too occupied keeping an eye out for school kids crossing the street.

An informal poll of local drivers turned up the same result — by an unusual 100 percent margin: Not one driver questioned was aware of the No Left Turn sign at Walnut Street and Neosho Boulevard. Not one.

That should tell us something.

In contrast, most knew that left turns weren’t allowed onto the Boulevard from Daugherty Road in front of the Oriental House. There, the postings are much bigger and more clearly marked.

That should also tell us something.

So, as city crews are busy replacing signs this winter, we urge them to substitute the No Left Turn sign on Walnut Street with something just a little more visible.

It only makes sense.
