While gasoline prices are not what they were this time last year, it’s still good to know you won’t have to drive far to celebrate the Independence Day holiday this year.

Several events are slated for the Neosho area this holiday weekend.

On Friday, Granby’s Old Mining Town Days gets under way, featuring the naming of the community’s citizen of the year and a number of musical acts, including local favorites Duke Mason and The Granny Chicks. On Saturday, the fun kicks off at 7 a.m. with a 5K run and pancake feed, followed by a car show, pet and bike shows, a parade, a reunion at the school and music from Dewayne Bowman. And on Sunday, you can catch the Old Timers Ballgame at the city ballpark as well as music from Area 51 and The Thunderbird Band. Then stay for the big fireworks finale, to be held at 9:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Seneca will also hold its Fourth of July celebration Saturday, beginning with a 7 a.m. 5K run at the Iva E. Wells Middle School, a parade at 10 a.m., a duck race, the Seneca 4-State Idol Contest, music by the Believers, the Brent Baker Band and the Ben Miller Band and fireworks set to music.

Both these events look like a lot of fun, all close to home. We hope to see you at one or both.
