7 ’o clock in the morning doesn’t seem like an ideal time for a public city board to meet.
But that’s exactly the time the city of Neosho’s parks and recreation board held its meeting Thursday.
While the majority of our town’s citizens were enjoying a cup of morning joe, or hustling to get their children off to school, the members of the parks and recreation board were discussing the future of the department and the city budget process.
There is a big push for improved transparency in all levels of government, from the White House down to city halls.
And at a time when the spotlight is shining bright on city affairs, it doesn’t make any sense as to why a city board would decide to hold its meetings at a time when it is not convenient for the majority of the public to attend.
We understand the reason for the time change was because a member of the board had secured employment that did not allow them to meet at the previous time in the evening.
While we understand the need to earn a paycheck, we do not agree with moving the meeting time to 7 a.m.
We hope the members of the parks and rec board will reconsider, and meet at a time during normal business hours, or in the evening, where the public can attend if need be.
