A special meeting of the Neosho R-5 School Board to appoint an interim board member will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at central office, 115 E. Hickory St.

“(The meeting’s) primary purpose is to choose someone to fill Shirley Cummins’ unexpired term,” said Cindy Norman, board president.

According to Dr. Richard Page, superintendent of the school district, nine citizens have sent in a letter of interest to fill the position.

The person who is appointed to the position will only hold the seat until the next election in April.

The other item – for discussion only – on Wednesday’s agenda deals with the location of the district’s central office

“Our lease is coming up,” Page said. “So we have to make some decisions whether we want to continue to lease or to look for something else. That is on the action item for the next board meeting, so there is going to be some discussion on it this time.”

Page noted the administration has been in the office location since September 2008.

“It is a yearly lease, it is the Larry Chalmers (insurance) building that we are leasing from Larry,” Page said. “We pay a rent on it, but part of that goes to payment if we chose to buy. We pay about $2,700 or $2,800 a month, but then all together that comes out to be about $33,000 a year and about $25,000 could and can be applied to principle.”
