Rose State played spoiler in Crowder’s season opener Saturday at Roughrider Soccer Field.
Sophomore forward Julio Hernandez made the winning goal 10 minutes into overtime and delivered Rose State a 3-2 win.
Freshman left wing Michael Ball earned Rose State a 2-all score with 13 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in regulation.
Early in the second half, Crowder thought it had taken a 3-1 lead on a Joe Mbaye ball off a sharp Victor Meneses, but it was waived off due to an offside penalty.
The ‘Riders — namely freshman forward Phillips Gomez — were called for multiple offsides in the second half and overtime, much to the disbelief of veteran head coach Brad Smith, the players, and the fans at Roughrider Soccer Field.
Late in the first half, sophomore midfielder Leo Mueller put Crowder ahead 2-1 on a free kick that he lofted perfectly over Rose State’s five-man wall and goalkeeper Owen Wheeler.
The ‘Riders earned a tie score with 15:43 remaining before halftime on a Musa Kamara goal off a pass from freshman midfielder Casey Faulkner.
Kamara scored the first goal of Crowder’s 10th anniversary season. The ‘Riders played their first match August 22, 2008 against MCC-Maple Woods.
Crowder returns home Saturday for its Region 16 opener against St. Charles.
