COMMERCE, Okla. — The East Newton Lady Patriots finished second place in the Commerce Tournament, falling 3-2 to Adair (Oklahoma) in extra innings Saturday afternoon.
This marks back-to-back second place finishes for the Lady Patriots in this tournament.
The Lady Patriots punched their championship game ticket with a 3-0 mark in pool competition, culminated by a 3-1 win Friday over host Commerce.
Oxendine allowed one run on five hits, numbers more than good enough to hold up for the win since East Newton scattered single runs in the first, the fourth, and the sixth.
Brynne Smith and Chelsea Hawkins led the Lady Patriots offensively with a pair of hits, while it was Oxendine, Robin Hussong, and Smith who drove in the runs.
Jay Hayward, Oxendine, and Smith crossed home plate, while Oxendine’s game at the plate was highlighted by a triple.
Over her first three games in the Commerce Tournament, Oxendine allowed just a single run on a combined 11 hits.
On Thursday, it was Oxendine’s shining day in the circle.
She pitched a pair of three-hit shutouts against Afton and Quapaw, games won by the Lady Patriots by both 6-0 scores.
Robin Hussong, who hit a homer in the loss to Reeds Spring, had a pair of hits and drove in three runs from the No. 7 spot against Quapaw. Jay Hayward, Oxendine, and Hawkins each joined  Hussong in the multi-hit parade with two.
Hawkins and Kayla Higginbotham each brought in a run, while Hawkins doubled for the lone East Newton extra base hit.
Oxendine struck out six and walked one.
Kinsey Sorrell, Hayward, Oxendine, and Hussong each had two hits in the win over Afton. Hussong batted in the No. 8 spot this game.
Sorrell led the way with a pair of RBI, while Hayward, Oxendine, Smith, and Randi Werries each drove in a run.
Oxendine struck out six and walked none.
