ANDERSON — The McDonald County Lady Mustangs assaulted Aurora during their Big 8 Conference opener Thursday.
Assault with a deadly bat — how about 12 runs on 11 hits during a 12-0 win?
Meanwhile, Mac County pitchers Alexa Hopkins and Kaylee Cornell combined on a two-hit shutout, each surrendering one of the two hits. Hopkins and Cornell also combined for eight strikeouts, Hopkins five and Cornell three.
Rita Santillan, Hopkins, and Maddie Colvin each collected two hits, while Whitney Kinser, Hopkins, and Colvin each drove in two runs. Cloee Helm, Kylie Helm, and Miryan Martinez each had one hit and one RBI, while Kenzie Stephens drove in a run and Chloe Colvin picked up a hit.
Speedy Santillan doubled and stole three bases, and she turned a free pass into an extra base as she accelerated upon the ball going past the Aurora catcher and beat the throw into second. Santillan scored three runs — a quarter of their runs — for the Lady Mustangs.
Chloe Ryan and Jacelyn Brinley each picked up Aurora’s only hits.
McDonald County scored four runs in the first, six in the second, and two in the third.
The Lady Mustangs ran their record to 3-5 overall entering Friday night’s road contest against the Nixa Lady Eagles.
