NIXA — The McDonald County Lady Mustangs won a 10 inning thriller from the Nixa Lady Eagles on Friday night.
The teams were stuck in a 9-all tie until the top of the 10th when Maddie Colvin’s two-out RBI single put the Lady Mustangs ahead for good.
Nixa went down in order in the bottom of the 10th, as the Lady Eagles flied out to center fielder Cloee Helm, left fielder Rita Santillan, and right fielder Kenzie Stephens in foul territory to end the game.
McDonald County scored four runs in the top of the first, then Nixa answered with five in the bottom half of the first. The Lady Mustangs answered right back with four in the second and led the Lady Eagles 8-6 after two complete.
McDonald County scored a run in the third and would not score again until the dramatic 10th, while Nixa plated single runs in the third, the fourth, and the sixth.
Alexa Hopkins led the Lady Mustangs with four RBI all courtesy her grand slam, while Helm collected four hits at the top of the Lady Mustangs order. The speedy Santillan collected three hits and Whitney Kinser collected three runs scored, two hits, and two RBI.
Kylie Helm showed a great eye at the plate, drawing four walks from Nixa pitchers Rylie Bennet and Morgan Jones.
In addition to Hopkins’ grand slam, the Lady Mustangs collected six doubles — including two for Santillan — and stole eight bases, taking advantage of their superior team speed. Six different players combined for those steals.
Hopkins went the distance in the circle, a big win and a big day overall for the freshman. She allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 16 hits over 10 innings. She struck out one and walked three.
McDonald County returns to action Thursday on the road against Big 8 Conference foe Seneca.
