AURORA — The East Newton Lady Patriots improved to 5-2 overall and won their Big 8 Conference opener in big offensive style Tuesday against Aurora, 17-8.

AURORA — The East Newton Lady Patriots improved to 5-2 overall and won their Big 8 Conference opener in big offensive style Tuesday against Aurora, 17-8.
The Lady Patriots shelled Aurora with nine runs in the top of the first, then pushed across two in the fourth, four in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
Aurora, meanwhile, scored one in the first, one in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth.
The Lady Patriots were led by Brynne Smith's three hits and she was joined in the multihit department by Jay Hayward, Kinsey Sorrell, Kayla Higginbotham, and Kaitlyn Hailey. That quintet combined for 11 of East Newton's 13 hits, with Chelsea Hawkins and Randi Werries each picking up the other two.
Hailey drove in four runs for the Lady Patriots and Smith brought home a pair of runs. Hawkins and Higginbotham each scored three runs, while Hayward, Sorrell, Robin Hussong, and Werries each came home twice. All nine players in the lineup scored at least one run, with Natalie Oxendine, Smith, and Hailey each scoring one run.
Hailey and Hawkins each doubled.
Oxendine pitched the first six innings for East Newton to run her record to 5-2. She allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits over six innings. She struck out seven and walked two, with 43 of her 53 pitches good for strikes and 27 of her 30 first pitches got her on the good foot.
Sorrell pitched the other inning, both hitless and scoreless and over in only eight pitches. She walked one and struck out none.
East Newton returned to action Thursday on the road against Big 8 rival Cassville. The Lady Patriots then hit the road Friday and Saturday for play in the Ozark Tournament.
