WEST SENECA, Okla. —Seneca's Chelsea Beville and Cassville's Josie Lone were the stories during Tuesday's Big 8 Conference battle between the Lady Indians and the Lady Wildcats that went scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.
Seneca plated four runs in that sixth inning and held on for a 4-1 win.
Beville, a sophomore, delivered one of her best performances in the circle, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits over seven innings. She fanned five and walked two, with 70 of her 96 pitches good for strikes. She worked seven groundouts and three flyouts, and started on the good foot with 18 of her 24 first pitches thrown for strikes.
The Lady Indians played solid defense behind her, with just one error.
Lone, a senior and one of the best strikeout pitchers around, allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits over six innings. She struck out nine and walked three, two of which proved very untimely. Lone threw 63 strikes among her 97 pitches.
The Lady Wildcats committed no errors.
Chaney Platner and Gracie Heckart came through with the game's biggest hits.
Leading off the sixth, the fleet-of-foot Adron Durman led off with a bunt single and then Beville worked one of the three walks from Lone. Grace Johnson, a very productive member of the Seneca lineup in recent games, did the fundamental thing by sacrificing Durman and Beville each over 60 feet.
Platner delivered her two-run single, she advanced to second on the throw, and then advanced to third on Mekaylee Beard's foul out.
Mikayla French worked a walk for runners at the corners, French then stole second to give Heckart two runners in scoring position, and Heckart connected on a two-out two-run single.
Seneca, winners of three of their last four games, improved to 4-6 overall and 1-0 Big 8 entering their conference clash Thursday at home against McDonald County.
