One of three games Friday night in the Daily News coverage area pitting an unbeaten against a winless team, the Diamond Wildcats remained looking for their first win after a 49-24 defeat to the Lockwood Tigers.

Lockwood’s win pushed the Tigers’ record to 5-0 this season, a start the Tigers have enjoyed three of the last four seasons.

The Tigers certainly remembered last year’s defeat to Diamond, one that helped the Wildcats earn their first outright Spring River Valley Conference title in school history.

Lockwood built a 40-point lead at one point, behind the big plays of junior quarterback Payton Masterson. Let’s see, Masterson rushed for 249 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Give those offensive linemen and other blockers a big hug.

Proving himself not an one-trick pony, Masterson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Logan Sparkman.

Lockwood ball carriers Justin Nentrup and Josh Osterdyk added 80 and 69 yards, respectively.

The road does not get any easier for Diamond in Week 6 with unbeaten Sarcoxie owning a 5-0 record on the season and outscoring its opponents by a ridiculous 248-46 this season. Sarcoxie welcomes the Wildcats, a team it beat last season for Diamond’s lone SRVC loss.
