The East Newton Lady Patriots played eight games in five days and came out 4-4 over that stretch and 9-7 overall on the season, surpassing last season's wins.

East Newton played five games in the Ozark Tournament last weekend, mostly against bigger schools, finishing 2-3 with a 8-1 loss to Ozark, a 10-0 loss to Oak Grove, a 13-8 win over Willow Springs, a 8-3 win over Rolla, and a 10-3 loss to Republic.

Back to Big 8 Conference play Monday and the Lady Patriots were on the losing end of a 1-0 pitchers' duel between Cassville's Josie Lone and East Newton's Natalie Oxendine.

The Lady Patriots ended the eight-game stretch with a pair of wins against Lamar, 9-5 and 8-7 with one of the wins counting toward the Big 8 standings.

Tuesday was a big day for Kaitlyn Hailey.

She hit the game-winning single in the eighth of the 8-7 win, a wild contest where the teams combined for 15 runs and 26 hits.

Hailey bashed four hits in the 9-5 win, a single in the third, a double in the fourth, and two more doubles, one in the fifth and her third in the seventh.

Hailey scored three runs and drove in two runs on her four hits, helping East Newton to a commanding 9-2 lead.

All told, Hailey came out of the doubleheader with seven hits, four runs scored, and three RBI. Not a bad take from a day's work.

Kinsey Sorrell and Kayla Higginbotham each added two RBI, while Chelsea Hawkins and Robin Hussong each scored a pair of runs. Sorrell and Oxendine each had two hits.

Hawkins drove in two runs in the nightcap, while Sorrell scored three runs and collected three hits.

Oxendine picked up a pair of wins, going the distance in the 9-5 game and pitching five scoreless innings of relief in the nightcap. She earned 14 strikeouts.

East Newton returns home Tuesday for a Big 8 battle with Newton County foe Seneca, then the Lady Patriots bring in McDonald County on Thursday, before home games against Neosho and Aurora.
