AURORA — It’s already been a historic season for the East Newton Lady Patriots.

After earning a win Saturday over Kearney in the Carthage Tournament, East Newton secured a school record 14 wins.

East Newton added to its school record and avenged last season’s Class 3, District 12 loss with a thrilling 11-10 win Wednesday night over Carl Junction in the district quarterfinals.

Class 3, District 12 made a venue change Wednesday, moving from Monett to Aurora. Other districts — like Neosho and McDonald County in Class 4, District 12 at Carthage — pushed their games a day back, rather than change location on the fly.
East Newton and Carl Junction sure played a wild one Wednesday night.

The Lady Patriots struck first with single runs in the first and second, then Carl Junction scored four in the top of the fourth and East Newton rattled five runs right back in the bottom half, and the teams exchanged leads multiple times until the bottom of the seventh when East Newton senior Brynne Smith broke an 10-all score with a RBI single bringing home fellow senior Jay Hayward.

In a game that featured a combined 33 hits, none were bigger than Smith’s single.

Former Neosho player Emily Mojica led the Lady Patriots with two hits and three RBI. Hayward and Smith each collected three hits, while Smith drove in two runs and Hayward scored three runs. Robin Hussong drove in a pair of runs. Kinsey Sorrell added two hits and two RBI. Natalie Oxendine had two runs scored, three hits, and one RBI.

Mojica homered, Hayward tripled, and Kaitlyn Hailey knocked a RBI double.

Although it was not her most sparkling performance in the circle, Oxendine will undoubtedly take the win over any pretty stats. She allowed 10 runs (all earned) on 15 hits over seven innings, and she struck out seven and worked through four walks.

East Newton improved to 15-12 and earned the right to play No. 2 seed Cassville. In the regular season, Cassville took a pair of games from East Newton, 6-2 and 1-0.

In the other game Wednesday, Nevada rolled through Aurora 15-0 and earned the right to play top seed Monett in the other semifinal Thursday.
