GRANBY — The East Newton Patriots finished their regular season winless, taking a 41-6 loss Friday night to the Monett Cubs at Don Johnston Stadium.

Brett Pendergraft’s 62-yard touchdown run on a reverse play with 2 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the contest gave the Patriots their only points of the game and their first points since a 36-6 loss to the Seneca Indians four weeks ago. The Patriots were blanked three straight games.

The Patriots were hurt Friday night by six turnovers overall and five in the first half, and the Cubs capitalized on the Patriots’ mistakes with points.

Monett ended a six-game losing streak — all Big 8 Conference opponents — and the Cubs, defending Class 3 state champions, open districts against Reeds Spring, who finished mere points behind No. 1 seed Seneca in Class 3, District 4. Since Cassville defeated Reeds Spring in head-to-head competition, Cassville leaps over Reeds Spring into the No. 2 spot and No. 3 Reeds Spring hosts No. 6 Monett on Friday night.

Meanwhile, East Newton will face Seneca on Friday night.

East Newton’s current 11-game losing streak began with a loss to Monett in Week 9.
