MONETT — The McDonald County Mustangs finished 11th in the 21-team Monett Tournament on Saturday, led by one first place finish.
Jakob Gerow, state-ranked in Class 3, earned first at 126 pounds behind five wins in the tournament, including a 12-2 major decision against Monett’s Joel Barrientos in the championship match. Gerow won a 8-1 decision against Bolivar’s Luke Moffett in the championship bracket and he won by pins in his first three matches, taking down Reeds Spring’s Anthony Tolbert in 1 minute, 18 seconds, Logan-Rogersville JV’s Owen Christian in 1:12, and Oak Grove JV’s Rylee Mills in 1:24.
State-ranked Oscar Ortiz and Bronnie Kinser did not wrestle Saturday for the Mustangs.
Timber Teague (182) finished second, with three wins before a loss by pinfall to Oak Grove’s Joel Martin in the championship match. Teague won a 5-1 decision against Nevada’s Adam Guenther, then pinned Bentonville West’s Pono Doctorello in 3:20 in the quarterfinals and won a 10-7 decision against Nixa’s Marek Davis in the semifinals. Teague reached 20 wins on the season.
McCoy Ikosia (285) finished sixth, Christian Davidson (106) 10th, Justin Smith (120) 15th, Codie Evans (132) 11th, Marshall Brock (138) eighth, Jack Teague (152) eighth, Kevin Sackryas (160) 14th, Jesus Ocampo (195) ninth, and Jarred Maggard (220) 11th.
The Mustangs return to action Thursday with a double dual in Neosho against the host Wildcats and Webb City, both Class 3 foes who will be seen again later at districts and state competition.
