GRANBY — The points were not exactly flying Tuesday night when the East Newton Lady Patriots hosted Southwest.
In fact, the teams combined to score 15 points over the 16 minutes of the second half.
However, East Newton scored 20 points by halftime en route to a 30-14 rout of Southwest, giving the Lady Patriots their second win of the season and their second win in three games at the start of a new year.
In a game where East Newton scored 10 points in both quarters of the first half, of course neither team featured a double-digit scorer, but the Lady Patriots came the closest with eight points from Robin Hussong.
Hussong buried the game’s only two 3-point shots.
East Newton’s seasonal leading scorer Kinsey Sorrell, a four-sport standout in high school who’s headed for Labette Community College to play softball, added seven points, while both Brynne Smith and Kaitlyn Hailey contributed five points to the Lady Patriots’ cause.
Kendra Hickman and Madison McDermott rounded out the scoring chores with three and two, respectively, for the 2-11 Lady Patriots.
Meanwhile, for Southwest, no player generated more than Kaitlyn Bernard’s four points. Taylor Swindle added three, while the trio of Destiny Dulin, Emily Snyder, and Bonnie Robins each scored two. Caitlin Blevins reached the scoring column with her single made free throw.
East Newton returns to action Monday against Big 8 foe Lamar.
