KIRKWOOD— The No. 3-ranked Crowder Roughriders started their four-game Region 16 series in style with a sweep Wednesday of the St. Louis Archers, 5-1 and 17-0.

In the opener, Crowder sophomore Zach Jackson improved to 7-0 on the season with his fourth complete game of the season. Jackson allowed one run (earned) on six hits over seven innings and he was dominant with 11 strikeouts and no walks.

On the season, Jackson has a 2.95 ERA with 39 hits allowed, 14 earned runs allowed, 45 strikeouts, and eight walks over 42 2/3 innings.

Jackson has picked right up from his freshman season when he led Crowder in victories.

In the nightcap, fellow sophomore Aaron Ashby pitched even better against the Archers.

Ashby pitched an abbreviated five-inning no-hitter — abbreviated because of the run-rule — and he struck out 14 and walked six.

Over 12 innings Wednesday, Jackson and Ashby combined for 25 strikeouts or two per inning. Meanwhile, St. Louis pitchers combined to issue 17 free passes and three hit batters.

Offensively, Crowder scored one run in the first, six in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth, and five in the fifth to create a 17-0 rout.

Eight of the nine Crowder players had at least one hit and at least one RBI.

Frielin Cabrera doubled and singled, and produced five RBI. Tyler Duncan had a team-high three hits — all singles — plus two walks, two runs scored, and two RBI. Drew Reilly singled and drove in three runs. Kobe Morris scored four runs, walked three times, doubled, and hit a sacrifice fly to help produce two RBI. Brinson Williams doubled twice and drove in a run. Cameron Witt scored three runs, took one for the team twice, walked, and singled. Colten Nix scored three runs, tripled, and doubled. Cooper King scored three runs, drew a pair of walks, singled, and drove in two.

In the opener, on the fourth pitch of the game from St. Louis starter Matthew Blake, Morris hit a solo home run to spark a two-run first.

The ‘Riders scored two runs in both the first and the second, and plated their final run in the fifth.

Cabrera and King each picked up RBI and Crowder managed to score five runs despite being outhit by St. Louis 6-4.

Crowder (23-6, 10-0 Region 16) and St. Louis close out their four-game series Thursday at Roughrider Field.
