CHILLICOTHE — The Joplin Outlaws earned their 10th MINK League win of the season with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings Saturday night over the Chillicothe Mudcats at Shaffer Park.
It all started in the top of the 10th when Chillicothe reliever Preston Ludwick gave up a leadoff single to Zack Ehlen. Ludwick then compounded matters when he hit Blake Wynn with a pitch. That’s when the Outlaws took the lead on Kaleb DeLaTorre’s single, while Wynn and DeLaTorre each advanced one base on the throw. Wynn scored on Alex Wheeler’s sacrifice fly.
Equipped with a two-run lead, Joplin reliever Jacob Compton made sure it would not fall by the wayside, although it would be close. The Mudcats started the 10th like a house on fire, Nate Gawelko rocking a triple on Compton’s first pitch. Then, Jared Fry made it 6-5 with a RBI single. Compton hit Peyton Cormane with a pitch and then Dalton Robison singled to load the bases with one down. Compton finally nailed it down after Andrew Williams and Gaven Strobel each flied out to right.
Compton earned the win, allowing one run (earned) on four hits over four innings and he struck out two and walked one.
Former Webb City High stalwart Derick Newby took a no-decision, allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits over six innings and he balanced four strikeouts with four walks.
Offensively, the Outlaws managed eight hits on a night during which they combined for 12 strikeouts against Chillicothe hurlers Kent Frantz and Ludwick.
Ehlen and DeLaTorre each collected two hits, one a double for DeLaTorre, and Wynn and Wheeler each doubled for their lone hit. Jeff Wetzler and Alec Capshaw rounded out the hit parade. DeLaTorre and Wheeler each drove in two runs, bringing DeLaTorre to 20 on the season and Wheeler 10. Wetzler worked both of Joplin’s lone walks. Wynn was hit by pitch twice and scored three runs.
Joplin improved to 10-18 MINK League entering Sunday’s Chillicothe clash.
