GRANBY — The East Newton Patriots trailed their Big 8 Conference West rival Monett by a single point after one quarter Friday night.

Hunter Liveoak recovered a Monett live ball and East Newton capitalized on the short field with a Ryan Millett 2-yard touchdown run and the Patriots were down 7-6 with 5 minutes, 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, for the Patriots, Monett scored the game's final 28 points en route to a 35-6 victory at Don Johnston Stadium.

Monett scored its 28 unanswered evenly split between 14 in the second and 14 in the fourth quarter.

The Cubs took a 21-6 lead into intermission thanks to a 8-yard TD pass from Karter Brink to Gavin Wild and then a William Murphy TD run.

Monett picked up a pair of rushing scores in the fourth quarter, Gunnar Bradley and Murphy the beneficiaries of the Cubs' blocking.

The Cubs tallied nearly 300 yards on the ground and scored four rushing TDs, while East Newton struggled with under 100 total yards all night.

Opponents have outscored East Newton 317-34 this season and the Patriots (0-7) return to action in Week 8 on the road against Seneca, a 2-5 team which has generated nearly 200 but has surrendered 266 points.

East Newton's losing streak stands at 19 games and dates back to late in the 2016 season. The losing streak ironically began with a 56-13 loss to Monett in the regular season finale; the Cubs went on to win the Class 3 state title that season.

Monett, 2-5 overall, meanwhile hosts a 3-4 McDonald County squad in Week 8.
