CASSVILLE — The Aurora Lady ‘Houns rolled out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and established the tone early en route to a 2-0 semifinal win (25-15, 25-17) Wednesday evening over the Seneca Lady Indians, ending Seneca’s season with a 21-7-1 overall record.

Aurora went on to win the Class 3, District 12 title with a 2-0 victory (25-18, 26-24) later Wednesday over the Mount Vernon Lady Mountaineers.

During that 5-0 start for Aurora against Seneca, Julia McVey served a pair of aces and Brooke Bellamy and Belle Marquier each brought home kills.

The Lady Indians got as close as 9-7 in the first set, but they had very little answer for Bellamy at the net and Aurora’s 5-foot-11 junior with superb jumping ability produced five kills in the set, recording her fifth one to end the set in emphatic fashion.

Seneca played a much better second set, but McVey took over at the net like Bellamy in the first net and she produced six of her seven kills to close out the Lady Indians and punch the Lady ‘Houns district final ticket. Like Bellamy in the first set, McVey’s kill punctuated the victory. (McKey nearly decapitated Seneca’s Summer Anderson with her spike late in the match.)

McVey added five digs to her stat line.

Haley Miller led Seneca with three kills and five digs, while seniors Sarah Hoover and Taylor Mailes tallied three kills each during their final high school volleyball match.

The Lady Indians simply did not muster enough offensive firepower against an Aurora team Seneca beat in three sets in Big 8 Conference play.

Seneca had won 9 of its 10 matches prior to Wednesday night.

On Tuesday, in the district quarterfinals, Seneca defeated Monett 2-0 (25-12, 25-10).

Miller led with seven kills, Mailes and Hoover each had six, and senior Dayton Merriman produced four more. Merriman served three aces and the trio of Ashley Hollingsworth, Miller, and Hoover combined for three more aces with one each. Miller and Hoover each had six digs. Jessica Gorham had the assist on 19 Seneca points or 38 percent of the team’s points featured a Gorham assist.
