Two pitches into their doubleheader against the Ozark Generals, things didn’t look to be going the Dirtbags’ way. Ricky Vanderpool absolutely crushed a ball over the fence — and a Generals’ outfielder leapt up and snagged it back, robbing the Dirtbags’ shortstop of a home run.
Things got better for the Dirtbags however and they ended up sweeping the Generals in Crane on Sunday.
Seth McWilliams took the ball for Crowder in game one and pitched five shutout innings and struck out five. Travis Northern pitched the last two innings in the Dirtbags’ 3-2 win.
In the sixth inning, Jared Brown singled and stole second base. He scored the games first run on a Vanderpool base hit. Then, in the seventh inning, Drew Miller led off with a single and was moved to second base via a Tyler Marion sacrifice bunt. Silas Bohannon then hit an RBI double to score Miller and Brown rounded out the scoring with another single to score his Neosho High School classmate.
Brown finished with two hits to lead the Dirtbags offensively in game one.
In game two, Ethan Stenger started the game on the mound for Crowder, pitching five innings and allowing one run while striking out four.
In the third inning, after a Carter Marion walk, Kyle Dickens got off the snide in a big way. Hitless in his last four games, Dickens crushed a ball over the fence in left center field to give the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
“He hadn’t hit in four or five games,” Dirtbags’ coach Cary Marion said. “He was getting frustrated but he made some adjustments and he killed that ball. It was an absolute no doubter.”
In the eighth inning Dickens got another hit, although this time only a single, and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Miller then drove him home with a single.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ozark loaded the bases while trailing 3-2. With two out and the Dirtbags clinging to a one-run lead, Cary Marion called on Jake Stevenson.
Stevenson struck out the Ozark hitter to send the Dirtbags home with a sweep and their eighth straight win.
“The key was good defense,” Cary Marion said. “We turned four double plays on the day and made
some great plays in the outfield. Timely hitting, solid defense and pitching has led us to eight straight wins.”
In game two, Dickens and Miller each went 2-for-3 to lead the offensive attack for the Dirtbags.
