The Diamond Lady Wildcats bounced back from a big loss on Monday night with a hard-fought win on Thursday night in the Seneca Tournament.
Behind 11 points from Hanna Million, the Lady Wildcats topped Seneca, 44-40.
“It was tough. We kind of sleep walked through the first half,” Diamond coach Brian Brimacombe said. “Seneca had a couple of good looks that didn’t go down and that kind of gave us the chance to get ourselves back in it.”
At halftime, the Lady Indians took a 13-9 lead into the locker room. But, it was far from pretty for most of the first 16 minutes.
“We took a lead into the locker room sure,” Seneca coach Bob Coffey said. “But we also had already missed eight free throws and shot 20 percent from the field. We played great defense in the first half and couldn’t score. After a while when you don’t score, you are probably going to have some let down on defense.”
After halftime, both teams had more success on offense. Diamond scored 17 points in the third quarter to take control of the game. Seneca doubled their output in the third quarter alone.
“In the second half we just played harder,” Brimacombe said. “They outhustled and outworked us in the first half. I was disappointed because we are the bigger team and Seneca was getting offensive rebounds in the first half. So we challenged our bigs in the locker room at halftime and they came out and did a good job.”
Other scorers for Diamond were: Megan Wilson 10, Cady Littlefield 8, Heather Wilson 7, Stefani Thomas 5, Shayla Jones 2 and Asia Mahan 1.
Seneca got a game-high 16 points from Molli Cooper in the loss. Other scorers for Seneca were: Bailey Skelton 11, Maura Butler 4, Annie Howard 3 and Rachel Butterfield 2.
Seneca will face Willard in the final game of the Seneca Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“We have to put the ball in the hole,” Coffey said. “We need to make easy shots and free throws.”
Diamond returns home to face Golden City on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
