The East Newton Lady Patriots fell short of their main goal last week at the McAuley Lady Warriors Invitational.

But, they still brought home a trophy. The Lady Patriots went 2-1 in the tournament and took home third place after dominating Miller Saturday evening.

The tournament started with a bang for East Newton. Kourtney Brewster scored 20 points and Christin Wheeler had 13 as the Lady Pats smoked McAuley, 64-16. Other scorers in that game were: Lindey Broyles 8, Shelby Thomlinson 7, Whitney Thomlinson 5, Aubrey McDermott 4, Emily Brummett 4, Hailey Heilig 2 and Sarah Harper 1.

Friday, East Newton took on Crane. The Lady Pirates proved a little tougher adversary as the Lady Patriots fell, 44-37. Scorers for East Newton were: Brewster 16, Brummett 11, Heilig 5, Broyles 2, Kenzie Riegle 2 and Whitney Thomlinson 1.

Saturday, East Newton faced Miller in the third place game. After building a nine-point lead at halftime, the Lady Pats buried the Lady Cardinals in the third quarter and rolled to a 55-12 victory.

Miller scored just two points in the second half of that game. Heilig led the way with 18 points and five rebounds for East Newton. Other scorers were: Broyles 9, Brewster 8, Wheeler 6, McDermott 4, Brummett 4, Harper 2, Riegle 2 and Shelby Thomlinson 2. Wheeler had six rebounds for East Newton and Brummett had four assists.

“Our goal was to play in the championship game,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “We fell a little short of that. But, we lost to a good Crane team and we took care of business today.”

East Newton (8-12) will take on McDonald County monday at home.
