The East Newton Patriots had one big question coming into this basketball season: Who would pick up the scoring slack left behind by departed star Clint Broyles?
For at least one night, that question was answered.
Tucker Anderson dropped a game-high 30 points to lead the Patriots to an impressive, 65-48 win over Pierce City Tuesday night in the first round of the Pierce City Invitational.
“Overall, I though we did a good job,” East Newton coach Barry Yocom said. “Obviously, there were some first-game jitters. That’s to be expected.”
Other scorers for East Newton were: Clayton Harrell 11, Jaron McCully 7, Andrew Hightower 5, Sam Swartz 4, John Hansen 4, Payton Cook 2 and Colby Thomas 2.
“We set the tone on defense tonight,” Yocom said. “And we made plays on offense.”
Thursday, East Newton will take on the Thomas Jefferson Cavaliers and their big, 6-foot-7 center Alex Oserowsky in the tournament semifinals. That game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
