The Neosho Holiday Classic wasn’t the only holiday basketball tournament going on last week.
The East Newton Patriots traveled to Southwest High School for the Southwest Holiday Tournament.
The Patriots had an impressive week, going 3-1 and taking fifth place.
In the opening round, East Newton faced Pierce City. Tucker Anderson and Andrew Hightower had 18 and 15 points, respectively and the Patriots defeated the Eagles, 66-39.
Other scorers were: Sam Swartz 9, Jaron McCully 8, John Hansen 7, Clayton Harrell 5, Bryce Zimmerman 2 and Paton Cook 2.
In the second round, East Newton faced the No. 1-seed Billings.
Despite having three scorers in double figures, the Patriots lost, 67-52.
Anderson led East Newton with 17 points in that game. Harrell had 12 points and Hansen had 11.
Other scorers were Hightower with eight, Swarz with three and McCully with one.
In the third game, East Newton took on Hollister.
The game was even the whole way as the teams were tied at 24-24 going into the locker room. In fact, the game went into overtime with the score tied at 45 apiece. Anderson was fouled with less than two seconds remaining and hit one free throw to put East Newton up and Hollister couldn’t get a last second 3-pointer to fall. The Patriots won, 50-49.
Anderson finished that contest with a game-high 29 points.
Other scorers for East Newton were: Harrell 9, Hansen 6, Hightower 4 and Thomas 2.
In the fifth place game, East Newton saw a familiar opponent, Big 8 Conference member Cassville.
The Patriots trailed by two points at halftime but stormed ahead in the third quarter and held on for a 51-44 win. Anderson led the way once again with 17 points. Swarz and Hightower added 11 and 10, respectively.
Other scorers were Hansen with nine and Thomas with four.
“I was very pleased with the effort,” East Newton coach Barry Yocom said. “Our guys showed guts and determination and it was a good tournament for us.”
Anderson was named to the all-tournament team.
The Patriots were back in action Monday, at home against Sarcoxie.
Behind 27 points from Anderson, East Newton defeated the Bears, 55-43.
Hansen added 13 points for the Patriots who have now won three in a row dating back to the Southwest Tournament.
Other scorers for East Newton vs. Sarcoxie were: McCully 7, Hightower 4 and Harrell 4.
The Patriots (7-5) will travel to Nevada Friday.
