The season isn’t starting out the way most people thought it would for the East Newton Lady Patriots.

East Newton got 21 points and eight rebounds from preseason All-NDN guard Hailey Heilig and 12 points from freshman forward Kourtney Brewster, but couldn’t keep up with the high powered Carthage Lady Tigers in a 52-39 loss at home.

The loss drops East Newton, considered by many to be one of the area’s top teams coming into the season, to 1-3.

“Give a lot of credit to Carthage,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “I don’t think they’ve lost yet. But, I felt like we competed against them really well.”

In the first quarter, it appeared that East Newton was going to give Carthage all it could handle. Brewster scored six quick points and Heilig was a terror on the boards for the Lady Patriots. With less than a minute to play in the frame, East Newton led, 14-9. However, sparked by star player Kaylee Morgan, Carthage rattled off seven unanswered points to end the quarter and led 16-14 after one.

After that point, East Newton never led again.

In fact, the Lady Patriots were held to just nine points in the second quarter and trailed 32-23 at halftime. The deficit would have been 12 points, but Heilig drained a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

In the first half, Heilig and Brewster were the only Lady Patriots in the scorebook, Brewster with 12 and Heilig with 11.

“(Brewster) is definitely a physical presence which is something we’ve lacked,” Rinehart said. “She works very hard. She is still a freshman and she makes some mistakes, but they are things we think she will grow out of. Her physicality is something we’ve been missing and she definitely brings that to the table.”

In the third quarter, East Newton made a small run near the end of the frame to shrink the Carthage lead, at one point as high as 14 points, down to just eight going into the fourth quarter.

Unfortunately, East Newton could only manage five points in the fourth quarter and Carthage was able to ice the game from the free-throw line.

“We did what we wanted to in the third quarter and we came back to make it a game,” Rinehart said. “(Carthage) is just really balanced. They have a lot of weapons and we just never got over the hump. But I thought we gave ourselves a chance and against a team like that, that’s what you hope you can do.”

Other scorers for East Newton were Ellie Gore with four and Whitney Thomlinson with two. The Lady Patriots were just 7-of-16 from the free-throw line, 43.7 percent.
