The East Newton Lady Patriots just haven’t found the shooting touch so far in this tournament.

The Waynesville defense packed it in and limited the looks for Kourtney Brewster and Lindey Broyles on the block and Ellie Gore had another quiet game offensively as the Lady Tigers beat East Newton, 58-36 in second round action at the Neosho Holiday Classic Wednesday morning.

East Newton used solid defense and a pair of timely baskets late in the second quarter to keep the game within a manageable margin. But in the second half, Waynesville heated up from the floor and their ball movement frustrated the Lady Patriots as they pulled away.

In the third and fourth quarters, East Newton scored in double figures for the first time in the Classic. However, Waynesville was equal to the challenge, scoring 18 and 22 points, respectively in those periods.

The Lady Tigers were led by Nikie House with 14 points and Dorothy Adams with 12.

East Newton got 12 points from Hailey Heilig.

Other scorers for East Newton were: Gore 7, Broyles 6, Kenzie Riegle 4, Emily Brummett 3 and Whitney Thomlinson 3.

The Lady Patriots will take on Carl Junction today at 9 a.m. Waynesville will play Morrilton, Ark. at 10:30 a.m. Both games are in the middle school.
