From the start, it was an ugly game on the offensive end for both teams.
But, the Lady Patriots managed just enough on that end of the floor and won for the third time in four games, 36-29 over McDonald County.
After one quarter, East Newton led 7-2 on the strength of five quick points in the last minute of the frame. After that, McDonald County was forced to play catch up the rest of the way.
“We really live and die by our effort and for us to hold (McDonald County) to 29 shows that we played with great effort defensively,” East Newton coach Marty Rinehart said. “The effort was really good tonight. That’s been the name of the game for us lately.”
The Lady Mustangs, which dropped their third straight contest after winning five in a row, didn’t get into double figures until the third quarter. This was despite the fact that McDonald County freshman Preslea Reece was the most consistent offensive player on the floor. She finished with a game-high 15 points.
“We were just out of sync,” McDonald County coach LaDonna McClain said. “We just really struggled to score from the start. When we finally did get something going, it was too late.”
McDonald County outscored East Newton 16-10 in the fourth quarter. But, the Lady Patriots had built a 27-13 lead going into the final eight minutes.
Other scorers for McDonald County were: Kenzie Dill 8, Asthon Pratt 3 and Callie Jo Shaver 3. Darian Stancell had a team-high six rebounds and Dill finished with four steals.
East Newton (9-12) was led by Hailey Heilig. The junior guard finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“Hailey has been pressed into a leadership position and I’m not sure if that’s in her comfort zone,” Rinehart said. “We’ve challenged her to step up and do that and she’s really starting to show it for us. The last two games, she’s played really well.”
Other scorers for East Newton were: Lindey Broyles 7, Kourtney Brewster 6, Shelby Thomlinson 6, Whitney Thomlinson 4 and Kenzie Riegle 2. Shelby Thomlinson also had three steals and three assists for the Lady Patriots.
East Newton will host Cassville Thursday. McDonald County (10-11) will host Mt. Vernon Tuesday at 6 p.m.
