To say there were still some hurt feelings when the Diamond boys basketball team traveled to East Newton Tuesday night would be something of an understatement.
The Wildcats took on the Patriots on the hardwood for the first time since their heartbreaking loss in the semifinals of the district tournament last season and exacted a small measure of revenge.
Behind 36 points from Kyle Heman, the Wildcats sprinted to an 82-55 win in the non-conference contest.
After a fairly close first quarter, Diamond (13-2) stomped on the accelerator and cruised to a 36-19 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats would extend their lead in both the third and fourth quarters en route to the 28-point victory.
East Newton (8-8) was led in scoring by Tucker Anderson with 16 points. Jaron McCully had 10 points for the Patriots.
Other scorers for East Newton were: Andrew Hightower 9, Clayton Harrell 7, Sam Swartz 5, John Hansen 4 and Colby Thomas 4.
For Diamond, Ryan Jinks added 18 points in the win. Jinks’ half court heave at the buzzer of last year’s district semifinal rimmed in and out to send Diamond home and East Newton to the district title game.
This time around, there was no buzzer-beater needed.
Other scorers for Diamond were: Jared Huffman 9, Trent Hayes 6, Logan Myers 4, Chance Hardy 4, Scott Corn 3 and Brent Olsen 2.
Diamond will take on Jasper Friday night as the Wildcats will celebrate homecoming.
East Newton will travel to Clever Friday night.
