The East Newton Patriots got back to .500 Tuesday night overall and in Big 8 Conference play with a come-from-behind victory on the road over the Aurora Houn’ Dawgs, 53-45.

After three quarters, the Patriots trailed the Dawgs, 36-32. But East Newton used a 21-9 fourth quarter advantage to earn the eight-point victory.

“I thought we played well in the first quarter and in the fourth quarter,” East Newton head coach Barry Yocom said. “We’ve got to work on being more consistent for four quarters.”

East Newton led 17-11 after the first quarter, but only managed six points in the second and didn’t regain the lead until the fourth.

The Patriots took full advantage of the charity stripe in the win, particularly in the fourth quarter.
“We went 13-of-14 at the (free throw) line in the fourth quarter,” Yocom said. “That combined with holding them to just nine points was huge.”

East Newton (9-9, 1-1 Big 8) was led in scoring by Tucker Anderson with 20 points. Freshman guard Sam Swartz added 10 for the Patriots.

Other scorers for East Newton were: Andrew Hightower 9, Jarron McCully 6, John Hansen 6 and Colby Thomas 2.
