The McDonald County AA American Legion team looked to build on the momentum from Thursday’s doubleheader sweep over Carthage when they took the field Saturday in Carl Junction.
The home team had other ideas and McDonald County was swept in the two game set.
Carl Junction used a six run sixth inning to break game one open en route to a 10-2 win over McDonald County to end their modest winning streak at two games.
In game two, things looked like they were going to get better as McDonald County plated two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. However, Carl Junction quickly erased the deficit and took a 6-2 lead into the third inning.
“We came out early and scored two in the first,” McDonald County Legion coach Robert Cornell said. “We did what we needed to offensively there but we ran into some pitching struggles. They came out and scored some runs on us right away.”
Trent Frazier came on in relief and kept McDonald County in the game. Frazier pitched four innings and allowed just one run.
“Frazier pitched a good game,” Cornell said. “He came on after the second and really shut them down. They jumped to a big lead early but Frazier pitched great and I couldn’t have asked any more from him.”
Frazier also finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate batting in the lead off spot.
In the fifth inning, McDonald County loaded the bases and couldn’t score any runs. In the sixth inning, McDonald County rallied, scoring three runs to make the score 7-5 and spark some life into their dugout.
Unfortunately, that momentum couldn’t be sustained and the game ended with that final score.
“We scored a few more but we just couldn’t make up that deficit,” Cornell said. “Carl Junction hit the ball well today, I commend them for that. They hit the ball while we didn’t.”
The McDonald County AA team returns to action on Tuesday at home.
“We’ve got to come out and be ready to hit the ball on Tuesday,” Cornell said. “We play Carthage again so it should be a pretty good game. Our pitchers need to be ready to throw and our defense needs to be ready behind him.”
As Carthage is a district opponent, the teams will play two seven-inning games starting at 6 p.m.
