The McDonald County AA American Legion team got off the snide on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep at Carthage.
In game one, McDonald County stepped on the gas early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, and never let up en route to a 13-6 win.
Michael Long started the game on the mound and threw five innings to earn the first win of the year.
“We just came out ready to play,” McDonald County Legion coach Robert Cornell said. “Michael Long threw five strong innings for us. We came out early with some runs and we were off to the races.”
Chance Lemm played like a man on fire in game one. Lemm was 3-for-4 with four RBI while Cooper Underwood chipped in with two hits, including a triple, and three RBI.
McDonald County scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second inning, two in the third inning and
five runs in the fourth inning.
Michael Haul pitched two innings of relief in the opener for McDonald County.
In game two, Mac County got another solid pitching performance to top Carthage 8-4. Jake Wilkie pitched four innings and struck out two to earn the win on the mound. Haul pitched a scoreless fifth to close the door for McDonald County.
Offensively, McDonald County scored three runs in the second inning via a Kyle Turner two-run double and a Haul RBI single to get the ball rolling. They followed that up with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Haul collected two hits and two RBI to lead a balanced McDonald County attack in game two.
“Wilkie threw four good innings,” Cornell said. “I can’t complain about our effort, it was immaculate. We left everything on the field tonight.”
McDonald County plays at Carl Junction on Saturday at 11 a.m.
