It may not have been the most entertaining game to watch, but the McDonald County Lady Mustangs will take it.
Callie Jo Shaver was the only player in the game to score in double figures with 10 points and the Lady Mustangs defeated the Neosho Lady Wildcats, 38-27.
With the win, McDonald County (10-8) has now won five in a row.
For the Lady ‘Cats, this was the first game played in 11 days. At times, they looked rusty, particularly on the offensive end. However, the coach insists that was not the problem, nor is it an excuse.
“I don’t think this had anything to do with us having a few days off,” Neosho coach Lance Robbins said. “We had some girls who were sick and it gave us time to work on some things we needed to clean up. I think what happened tonight was we ran into a very good McDonald County team that has won five in a row now and is confident.”
Neosho (7-12) was coming off of a big win over East Newton on Jan. 16. That win had snapped a four-game losing streak for the Lady Wildcats.
The Wildcats had five players etch their names in the scorers book, but nobody had more than nine points. Ashley Gilion led the way with nine. Other scorers were Matty Liedtke and Catie Cummins with six each, Morgan Rathmann with four and Chelsey Henry with two.
Henry, one of the area’s top freshman basketball players, was matched up with another frosh star in McDonald County’s Preslea Reece.
Reece scored seven points on the night. Other scorers for the Lady Mustangs were Asthton Pratt
with nine, Kenzie Dill (the homecoming queen) and Darian Stancell with six.
The difference in the game was that McDonald County simply beat Neosho at its own gameplan.
“We tried to make it a possession by possession game and I think we were actually able to do that,” Robbins said. “Unfortunately, when you do that and miss a few easy shots, it’s not good. We did what we wanted to do, we just need to finish plays.”
Neosho will play Nevada on Monday on the road. McDonald County takes on Carthage in a measuring stick game on Tuesday night in Anderson.
